Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

02.13 Evening:

Thy Word hath quickened me.

The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening Spirit.

As the Father hath Life in Himself; so hath He given to the Son to have Life in Himself;--I am the Resurrection, and the Life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die.

In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men. . . . As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God

It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the Words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit, and they are Life.-- The Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged Sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Ps 119:50 1Co 15:45 Joh 5:26 11:25,26 1:4,12,13 6:63 Heb 4:12

02.13 Evening:

(Psalm 119:50)This is my comfort in my affliction: for Thy Word hath quickened me.

(I Corinthians 15:45)And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening Spirit.

(John 5:26)For as the Father hath Life in Himself; so hath He given to the Son to have Life in Himself;--(John 11:25,26)Jesus said unto her, I am the Resurrection, and the Life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?

(John 1:4)In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men. . . . (John 1:12,13)But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

(John 6:63)It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the Words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit, and they are Life.--(Hebrews 4:12)For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged Sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Psalm 64

To the Chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy. Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity: who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words: that they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them? They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away. And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing. The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

Romans 8:28-39

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter [Psalm 44]. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:1,2 I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my Rock, and my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my Buckler, and the Horn of my salvation, and my high Tower.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 31:1-3 In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in Thy Righteousness. Bow down Thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be Thou my strong Rock, for an House of defence to save me. For Thou art my Rock and my Fortress; therefore for Thy Name's sake lead me, and guide me.

02.13 Morning:

Upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a Man above upon it.

The Man Christ Jesus;--Made in the likeness of men.--Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death.

I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore--Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over Him. For in that He died, He died unto sin once: but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God.--What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where He was before?--He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His Own right hand in the heavenly places, --In Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Though He was crucified through weakness, yet He liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God.

(Ezekiel 1:26)And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire Stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a Man above upon it.

(I Timothy 2:5)For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus;--(Philippians 2:7,8)But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a Servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a Man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.--(Hebrews 2:14)Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

(Revelation 1:18)I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.--(Romans 6:9,10)Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over Him. For in that He died, He died unto sin once: but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God.--(John 6:62)What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where He was before?--(Ephesians 1:20)Which He wrought in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His Own right hand in the heavenly places, --(Colossians 2:9)For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

(II Corinthians 13:4)For though He was crucified through weakness, yet He liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you.
