Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

10.28 Evening:

The enemy.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.―Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with Truth, and having on the breastplate of Righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of Peace; above all, taking the shield of Faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a Light unto me.

Lu 10:19 1Pe 5:8 Jas 4:7 Eph 6:11-16 Mic 7:8

10.28 Evening:

(Luke 10:19)Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

(I Peter 5:8)Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:--(James 4:7)Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

(Ephesians 6:11-16)Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. "God commendeth His Love . . . the obedience of One"

Romans 4:13-5:21

For the Promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his Seed, through the Law, but through the Righteousness of Faith. For if they which are of the Law be heirs, Faith is made void, and the Promise made of none effect: because the Law worketh wrath: for where no Law is, there is no transgression. Therefore it is of Faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the Promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the Law, but to that also which is of the Faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (as it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before Him Whom he believed, even God, Who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Who against hope believed in Hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy Seed be. And being not weak in Faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: he staggered not at the Promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in Faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what He had promised, He was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for Righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; but for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on Him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Therefore being justified by Faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by Whom also we have access by Faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in Hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, Hope: and Hope maketh not ashamed; because the Love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. For when we were yet without Strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth His Love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His Life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by Whom we have now received the Atonement.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (for until the Law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of Him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the Free Gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the Gift by grace, which is by One Man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the Gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the Free Gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the Gift of Righteousness shall reign in Life by One, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the Righteousness of One the Free Gift came upon all men unto justification of Life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One shall many be made Righteous. Moreover the Law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through Righteousness unto Eternal Life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my Light and my Salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the Strength of my Life; of whom shall I be afraid?

The Word for the day--
Isaiah 51:5 My Righteousness is near; My Salvation is gone forth, and Mine Arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon Me, and on Mine Arm shall they trust.

10.28 Morning:

He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no Intercessor: therefore His Arm brought salvation unto Him.

Sacrifice and offering Thou didst not desire; Mine ears hast Thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast Thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the Volume of the Book it is written of Me, I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy Law is within My heart.―I lay down My Life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have Power to lay it down, and I have Power to take it again.

There is no God else beside Me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside Me. Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.―There is none other Name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.

Isa 59:16 Ps 40:6-8 Joh 10:17,18 Isa 45:21,22 Ac 4:12 2Co 8:9

10.28 Morning:

(Isaiah 59:16)And He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no Intercessor: therefore His Arm brought salvation unto Him; and His Righteousness, it sustained Him.

(Psalm 40:6-8)Sacrifice and offering Thou didst not desire; Mine ears hast Thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast Thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the Volume of the Book it is written of Me, I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy Law is within My heart.--(John 10:17,18)Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My Life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have Power to lay it down, and I have Power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father.

(Isaiah 45:21,22)Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: Who hath declared this from ancient time? Who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside Me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside Me. Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.--(Acts 4:12)Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other Name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

(II Corinthians 8:9)For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.

I Timothy 4:15,16 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Psalm 72:17-19 His Name shall endure for ever: His Name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in Him: all nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be His Glorious Name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen.
