Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

05.28 Evening:

So run, that ye may obtain.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.―Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith.

Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

I press toward the mark.―I . . . so run, not as uncertainly; . . . I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, . . . I myself should be a castaway.

The fashion of this world passeth away.

Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth Righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent.―Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

05.28 Evening:

(I Corinthians 9:24)Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

(Proverbs 22:13)The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.--(Hebrews 12:1,2)Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith; Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

(II Corinthians 7:1)Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

(Philippians 3:14)I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.--(I Corinthians 9:26,27)I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

(I Corinthians 7:31)And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.

(II Peter 3:13,14)Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth Righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless.--(I Peter 1:13)Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

The Word of Christ. . . . a New Song

Colossians 3:16

Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all Wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and Spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Psalm 33:3-5 Sing unto Him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
For the Word of the Lord is right; and all His works are done in truth. He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

Psalm 40:3 And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Psalm 96:1,2 O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth.
Sing unto the Lord, bless His Name; shew forth His salvation from day to day.

Psalm 98:1 O sing unto the Lord a new song; for He hath done marvellous things: His Right Hand, and His Holy Arm, hath gotten Him the Victory.

Psalm 144:9,10 I will sing a new song unto Thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto Thee. It is He that giveth salvation unto kings: Who delivereth David His servant from the hurtful sword.

Psalm 149:1-9 Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord
a new song, and His praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in Him that made Him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise His Name in the dance: let them sing praises unto Him with the timbrel and harp. For the Lord taketh pleasure in His people: He will beautify the meek with salvation. Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. ¶Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand; to execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all His saints. Praise ye the Lord.

Isaiah 42:8-13
I am the Lord: that is My Name: and My glory will I not give to another, neither My praise to graven images. Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the Rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. Let them give glory unto the Lord, and declare His praise in the islands. ¶The Lord shall go forth as a mighty Man, He shall stir up jealousy like a Man of war: He shall cry, yea, roar; He shall prevail against His enemies.

Revelation 5:9,10 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the Book, and to open the seals thereof: for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Revelation 14:3,4 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.

The Lord is gracious

The Lord is gracious,

and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

The Word for the day--
I Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous Light:

Here is the entire sentence--

I Peter 2:9,10 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him Who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous Light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

05.28 Morning:

We look for the Saviour.

The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed Hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.―We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth Righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.―And it shall be said in that Day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.

05.28 Morning:

(Philippians 3:20)For our conversation is in Heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

(Titus 2:11-14)For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed Hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.--(II Peter 3:13,14)Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth Righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

(Hebrews 9:28)So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.--(Isaiah 25:9)And it shall be said in that Day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.

Philippians 4:8b " . . . think on these things"

Psalm 72:17-19 His Name shall endure for ever: His Name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in Him: all nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be His Glorious Name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen.
