Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

12.26 Evening:

He is able . . . to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him.

I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.―Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

My sheep hear My Voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: and I give unto them Eternal Life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.―He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the Day of Jesus Christ.―Is any thing too hard for the Lord?

Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Heb 7:25 Joh 14:6 Ac 4:12 Joh 10:27,28 Php 1:6 Ge 18:14 Jude 1:24,25

12.26 Evening:

(Hebrews 7:25)Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever Liveth to make intercession for them.

(John 14:6)Jesus saith unto him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.--(Acts 4:12)Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

(John 10:27,28)My sheep hear My Voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: and I give unto them Eternal Life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.--(Philippians 1:6)Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the Day of Jesus Christ:--(Genesis 18:14)Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

Parables (26)

Hear this, all ye people;
give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
My mouth shall speak of Wisdom;
and the meditation of My heart shall be of Understanding.
I will incline Mine ear to a parable ["proverb"]:
I will open My dark saying upon the harp.
Psalm 49:1-4

All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables;
and without a parable spake He not unto them:
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
I will open My mouth in parables;
I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
Matthew 13:34,35

Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have Eternal Life:
and they are they which testify of Me.
John 5:39

Proverbs 26

As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool. As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage. The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools. As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool. As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools. The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason. He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death, so is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; when he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation. Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 29:11 The Lord will give strength unto His people; the Lord will bless His people with Peace.

The Word for the day--
Isaiah 12:2 Behold, God is My Salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is My Strength and My Song; He also is become My Salvation.

Hear the entire chapter--

Isaiah 12
And in that day Thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise Thee: though Thou wast angry with Me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortedst Me. Behold, God is My Salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is My Strength and My Song; He also is become My Salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw Water out of the wells of Salvation.

And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon His Name, declare His doings among the people, make mention that His Name is exalted. Sing unto the Lord; for He hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"And in that day Thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise Thee: though Thou wast angry with Me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortedst Me. Behold, God is My Salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is My Strength and My Song; He also is become My Salvation."

Psalm 88:7 Thy wrath lieth hard upon Me, and Thou hast afflicted me with all Thy waves. Selah.

Isaiah 53:10-12 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His Soul an offering for sin, He shall see his Seed, He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see of the travail of His Soul, and shall be satisfied: by His Knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His Soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Hebrews 5:7-10 Who in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able to save Him from death, and was heard in that He feared; though He were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered; and being made perfect, He became the Author of Eternal Salvation unto all them that obey Him; called of God an High Priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 2:9-15 But we see Jesus, Who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man. For it became Him, for Whom are all things, and by Whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the Captain of their Salvation perfect through sufferings. For both He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of One: for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren, Saying, I will declare Thy Name unto My brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto Thee. And again, I will put My trust in Him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given Me. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

"Therefore with joy shall ye draw Water out of the wells of Salvation. And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon His Name, declare His doings among the people, make mention that His Name is exalted. Sing unto the Lord; for He hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee."

Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure River of Water of Life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. . . . Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the Water of Life freely.

John 4:13,14 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the Water that I shall give him shall be in him a Well of Water springing up into Everlasting Life.

John 7:37-39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of Living Water. (But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Again, the Word for the day--Isaiah 12:2 Behold, God is My salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is My Strength and My Song; He also is become My Salvation.

12.26 Morning:

Be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.

Ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.―As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him: rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the Faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.―He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.―That on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the Word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

By Faith ye stand.

I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap Life Everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the Household of Faith.

Psalm 72:17-19 His Name shall endure for ever: His Name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in Him: all nations shall call Him blessed.
