Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

05.26 Evening:

The City had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the Light thereof.

I saw in the way a Light from Heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. . . . And I said, Who art Thou, Lord? And He said, I am Jesus Whom thou persecutest.―Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and His Face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the Light.―The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an Everlasting Light, and thy God thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine Everlasting Light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

The God of all grace, . . . hath called us unto His Eternal Glory by Christ Jesus.

05.26 Evening:

(Revelation 21:23)And the City had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

(Acts 26:13)At midday, O king, I saw in the way a Light from Heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. . . .(Acts 26:15)And I said, Who art Thou, Lord? And He said, I am Jesus Whom thou persecutest.--(Matthew 17:1,2)And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and His Face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the Light.

(Isaiah 60:19,20)The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an Everlasting Light, and thy God thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine Everlasting Light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

(I Peter 5:10)But the God of all grace, Who hath called us unto His Eternal Glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

The Word for the day--
I Chronicles 16:8,9 Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon His Name, make known His deeds among the people. Sing unto Him, sing psalms unto Him, talk ye of all His wondrous works.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"Give thanks unto the Lord"

Hebrews 13:12-15 Wherefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His Own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek One to come. By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His Name.

"call upon His Name"

I Corinthians 1:1-3 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.

"make known His deeds among the people"

Isaiah 53:4-6,10-12 Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. . . .Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His Soul an offering for sin, He shall see His Seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see of the travail of His Soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His Soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Psalm 107:1-9 O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses. And He led them forth by the right Way, that they might go to a City of habitation. Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

Psalm 107:20-22 He sent His Word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions [cp.Jn 1:1,14;1Jn 4:14]. Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare His works with rejoicing.

I Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Psalm 22:31 They shall come, and shall declare His Righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that He hath done this.

"Sing unto Him, sing psalms unto Him, talk ye of all His wondrous works."

Ephesians 5:17-20 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and Spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Psalm 40:1-3 I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a Rock, and established my goings. And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Psalm 145:7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of Thy great goodness, and shall sing of Thy Righteousness.

Psalm 89:1 Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known Thy faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 59:16,17 But I will sing of Thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of Thy mercy in the morning: for Thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. Unto Thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.

Revelation 5:9,10 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the Book, and to open the seals thereof: for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Joel 2:26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied [cp. Jn 6:54,55; Ps 17:15], and praise the Name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and My people shall never be ashamed.

Again, the Word for the day
--I Chronicles 16:8,9 Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon His Name, make known His deeds among the people. Sing unto Him, sing psalms unto Him, talk ye of all His wondrous works.

05.26 Morning:

Our Lord Jesus, that Great Shepherd of the sheep.

The Chief Shepherd.―I am the Good Shepherd, and know My sheep, and am known of Mine.―My sheep hear My Voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: and I give unto them Eternal Life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of Righteousness for His Name's sake.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.―I am the Good Shepherd: the Good Shepherd giveth His Life for the sheep.―I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick.―Ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
