Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

11.19 Evening:

I will make the place of My Feet glorious.

Thus saith the Lord, The Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool.

Will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, Heaven and the Heaven of Heavens cannot contain Thee; how much less this house which I have built!

Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; and I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this House with glory, saith the Lord of hosts. . . . The glory of this latter House shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.

I saw a new Heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. . . . And I heard a great Voice out of Heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.

Isa 60:13 66:1 2Ch 6:18 Hag 2:6,7,9 Re 21:1,3

Romans 16:27 To God only wise,
be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.
I Peter 5:11 To Him
be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 63:1,2 O God, Thou art my God; early will I seek Thee: my soul thirsteth for Thee, my flesh longeth for Thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no Water is; to see Thy power and Thy glory, so as I have seen Thee in the Sanctuary.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"my soul thirsteth for Thee, . . .in a dry and thirsty land, where no Water is"

Isaiah 53:1-6 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the Arm of the Lord revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected of men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our Peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

John 4:14,15 But whosoever drinketh of the Water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the Water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of Water springing up into Everlasting Life. The woman saith unto Him, Sir, give me this Water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

John 7:38,39 He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of Living Water. (But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Isaiah 44:3,4 For I will pour Water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour My Spirit upon thy seed, and My blessing upon thine offspring: and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

Joel 2:28,29 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My Spirit.

"to see Thy power and Thy glory, so as I have seen Thee in the Sanctuary."

Psalm 77:13 Thy Way, O God, is in the Sanctuary: Who is so great a God as our God?

Isaiah 8:14 And He shall be for a Sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.--John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip? he that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

Psalm 78:54 And He brought them to the border of His sanctuary, even to this Mountain, which His right hand had purchased.

Psalm 98:1O sing unto the Lord a new song; for He hath done marvellous things: His right hand, and His Holy Arm ["Sanctuary" Ps 63:2], hath gotten Him the Victory....I Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the Victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Again, the Word for the day--Psalm 63:1,2 O God, Thou art my God; early will I seek Thee: my soul thirsteth for Thee, my flesh longeth for Thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no Water is; to see Thy power and Thy glory, so as I have seen Thee in the sanctuary.

11.19 Morning:

By their fruits ye shall know them.

Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is Righteous.―Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with Meekness of Wisdom.―Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the Day of visitation.

Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit....A good man out of the Good Treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

What could have been done more to My vineyard, that I have not done in it?

Mt 7:20 1Jo 3:7 Jas 3:11-13 1Pe 2:12 Mt 12:33,35 Isa 5:4
