Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

02.07 Evening:

Jesus . . . was moved with compassion toward them.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.--We have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.--Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the Way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.--He cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

Like as a father pitieth His children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him. For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.

Thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give Thy Strength unto Thy servant, and save the son of Thine handmaid.

Mt 14:14 Heb 13:8 4:15 5:2 Mr 14:37,38 Ps 103:13,14 86:15,16

02.07 Evening:

(Matthew 14:14)And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and He healed their sick.

(Hebrews 13:8)Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.--(Hebrews 4:15)For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.--(Hebrews 5:2)Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the Way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.--(Mark 14:37,38)And He cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

(Psalm 103:13,14)Like as a father pitieth His children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him. For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:1,2 I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my Rock, and my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my Buckler, and the Horn of my salvation, and my high Tower.

The Word for the day--
II Corinthians 12:9 And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My Strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the Power of Christ may rest upon me.

Here is some immediate context--

II Corinthians 12:6-10 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the Truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My Strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the Power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"lest I should be exalted above measure. . . . Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the Power of Christ may rest upon me."

II Corinthians 4:6,7 For God, Who commanded the Light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the Light of the Knowledge of the glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ. But we have this Treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the Power may be of God, and not of us.

"Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

Again, the Word for the day
--II Corinthians 12:9 And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My Strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the Power of Christ may rest upon me.

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

02.07 Morning:

When thou hast eaten and art full, . . . thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which He hath given thee.

Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God.--One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the Word of God and prayer.-- He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks.--The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and He addeth no sorrow with it

Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His Holy Name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, . . . Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; . . . Who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

(Deuteronomy 8:10,11)When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which He hath given thee. Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping His commandments, and His judgments, and His statutes, which I command thee this day:

(Luke 17:15-18)And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. (I Timothy 4:4,5)For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified by the Word of God and prayer.-- (Romans 14:6)He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.--(Proverbs 10:22)The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and He addeth no sorrow with it.

(Psalm 103:1-4)Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His Holy Name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
