Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

11.20 Evening:

One God, and One Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.―Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is One.

We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. Our fathers understood not Thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of Thy mercies;... Therefore He said that He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen stood before Him in the breach, to turn away His wrath, lest He should destroy them.

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the Heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to Him that appointed Him, as also Moses was faithful in all His house.

He is the Mediator of a better Covenant, which was established upon better promises...I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

11.20 Evening:

(I Timothy 2:5)For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus;

(Deuteronomy 6:4)Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:--(Galatians 3:20)Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is One.

(Psalm 106:6,7)We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. Our fathers understood not Thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of Thy mercies; but provoked Him at the sea, even at the Red sea... (Psalm 106:23)Therefore He said that He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen stood before Him in the breach, to turn away His wrath, lest He should destroy them.

(Hebrews 3:1-3)Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the Heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to Him that appointed Him, as also Moses was faithful in all His house. For this Man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He Who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.--(Hebrews 8:6)But now hath He obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the Mediator of a better Covenant, which was established upon better promises...(Hebrews 8:12)For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

"Will"

Thy Kingdom come. Thy
will{G2307} be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Matthew 6:10

Strongs: G2307

2307
θέλημα [QE/LHMA] {thélēma} \thel'-ay-mah\
from the prolonged form of 2309; a determination (properly, the thing), i.e. (actively) choice (specially, purpose, decree; abstractly, volition) or (passively) inclination:--
desire, pleasure, will.

2309 θέλω [QE/LW] {thélō} \thel'-o\
or ἐθέλω [E)QE/LW] {ethélō} \eth-el'-o\
in certain tenses θελέω[QELE/W] {theléō} \thel-eh'-o\
and ἐθελέω [E)QELE/W] {etheléō} \eth-el-eh'-o\
which are otherwise obsolete apparently strengthened from the alternate form of 138; to determine (as an active option from subjective impulse; whereas 1014 properly denotes rather a passive acquiescence in objective considerations), i.e. choose or prefer (literally or figuratively); by implication, to wish, i.e. be inclined to (sometimes adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense, to be about to; by Hebraism, to delight in:--desire, be disposed (forward), intend, list, love, mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, - ling(-ly)).

Amen.

I Peter 2:15,16 For so is the will{G2307} of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: as free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

I Peter 3:17 For it is better, if the will{G2307} of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

I Peter 4:1-5 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will{G2307} of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will {G2307}of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

I Peter 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will{G2307} of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

II Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will{G2307} of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

I John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will {G2307}of God abideth for ever.

I John 5:14,15 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will{G2307}, he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure {G2307} they are and were created.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will{G2307} be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Matthew 6:10

Romans 16:27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

I Peter 5:11 To Him
be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

The Word for the day--
Isaiah 35:3,4 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; He will come and save you.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees"

Hebrews 12:11-29 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable Fruit of Righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the Way; but let it rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and the Voice of Words; which voice they that heard intreated that the Word should not be spoken to them any more: (for they could not endure that which was commanded, and if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: and so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:) but ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the City of the Living God, the Heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the Firstborn, which are written in Heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the Mediator of the New Covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from Him that speaketh from Heaven: Whose Voice then shook the earth: but now He hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this Word, yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Wherefore we receiving a Kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: for our God is a consuming Fire.

I Timothy 2:8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

Job 4:3,4 Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands. Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

"behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; He will come and save you."

Psalm 94:1-23 O Lord God, to Whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to Whom vengeance belongeth, shew Thyself. Lift up Thyself, Thou Judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud. Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph? How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves? They break in pieces Thy people, O Lord, and afflict Thine heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless. Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it. Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall He not hear? He that formed the eye, shall He not see? He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not He correct? He that teacheth man knowledge, shall not He know? The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity. Blessed is the Man whom Thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest Him out of Thy Law; that Thou mayest give Him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked. For the Lord will not cast off His people, neither will He forsake His inheritance. But judgment shall return unto Righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it. Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity? Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence. When I said, My foot slippeth; Thy mercy, O Lord, held me up. In the multitude of my thoughts within me Thy comforts delight my soul. Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with Thee, which frameth mischief by a law? They gather themselves together against the Soul of the Righteous, and condemn the Innocent Blood. But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the Rock of my Refuge. And He shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.

Hebrews 10:35-39 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of Reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the Promise. For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, My Soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Hebrews 9:27,28 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Psalm 149:4 For the Lord taketh pleasure in His people: He will beautify the meek with salvation.

Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the Land of the Living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

Again, the Word for the day--Isaiah 35:3,4 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; He will come and save you.

11.20 Morning:

When I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a Light unto me.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour.―I will bring the blind by a Way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness Light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.―What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee. In God I will praise His Word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.―The Lord is my Light and my Salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the Strength of my Life; of whom shall I be afraid?
