Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

03.18 Evening:

His Name shall be in their foreheads.

I am the good Shepherd, and know My sheep.--The foundation of God standeth sure, having this Seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth the Name of Christ depart from iniquity.

The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him.--Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance--Now He which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

I will write upon him the Name of My God, and the Name of the City of My God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of Heaven from My God: and I will write upon him My new Name.--This is the Name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.

03.18 Evening:

(Revelation 22:4)And they shall see His Face; and His Name shall be in their foreheads.

(John 10:14)I am the good Shepherd, and know My sheep, and am known of Mine.--(II Timothy 2:19)Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this Seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth the Name of Christ depart from iniquity.

(Nahum 1:7)The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him.--(Revelation 7:3)Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

(Ephesians 1:13,14)In Whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the Word of Truth, the gospel of your salvation: in Whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.--(II Corinthians 1:21,22)Now He which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

(Revelation 3:12)Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the Temple of My God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the Name of My God, and the Name of the City of My God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of Heaven from My God: and I will write upon him My New Name.--(Jeremiah 33:16)In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the Name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:3 I will call upon the Lord, Who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 22:23,24 Ye that fear the Lord, praise Him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify Him; and fear Him, all ye the seed of Israel. For He hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the Afflicted; neither hath He hid His Face from Him; but when He cried unto Him, He heard.

Now hear the entire Psalm--testify of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (John 5:39)

Psalm 22
To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.

My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me? why art thou so far from helping Me, and from the words of My roaring? O My God, I cry in the daytime, but Thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. But Thou art holy, O Thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in Thee: they trusted, and Thou didst deliver them. They cried unto Thee, and were delivered: they trusted in Thee, and were not confounded. But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh Me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that He would deliver Him: let Him deliver Him, seeing He delighted in Him. But Thou art He that took Me out of the womb: Thou didst make Me hope when I was upon My mother's breasts. I was cast upon Thee from the womb: Thou art My God from My mother's belly.

Be not far from Me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed Me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset Me round. They gaped upon Me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint: My heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of My bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and My tongue cleaveth to My jaws; and Thou hast brought Me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed Me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed Me: they pierced My hands and My feet. I may tell all My bones: they look and stare upon Me. They part My garments among them, and cast lots upon My vesture. But be not Thou far from Me, O Lord: O My strength, haste Thee to help Me. Deliver My soul from the Sword; My Darling from the power of the dog. Save Me from the lion's mouth: for Thou hast heard Me from the horns of the unicorns.

I will declare Thy Name unto My brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise Thee. Ye that fear the Lord, praise Him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify Him; and fear Him, all ye the seed of Israel. For He hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the Afflicted; neither hath He hid His Face from Him; but when He cried unto Him, He heard. My praise shall be of Thee in the great congregation: I will pay My vows before them that fear Him. The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek Him: your heart shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before Thee. For the Kingdom is the Lord's: and He is the governor among the nations. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before Him: and none can keep alive his own soul. A Seed shall serve Him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare His righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that He hath done this.

Again, the Word for the day--Psalm 22:23,24 Ye that fear the Lord, praise Him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify Him; and fear Him, all ye the seed of Israel. For He hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the Afflicted; neither hath He hid His Face from Him; but when He cried unto Him, He heard.

03.18 Morning:

Mine eyes fail with looking upward: O Lord.

Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore vexed: but Thou, O Lord, how long? Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake.--My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

Ye have need of patience.

While they looked stedfastly toward Heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into Heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into Heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into Heaven.--Our conversation is in Heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:--That blessed Hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
