Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

04.28 Evening:

I will hope continually, and will yet praise Thee more and more.

Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect.―Leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God.―The path of the just is as the shining Light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect Day.

I love the Lord, because He hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because He hath inclined His ear unto me, therefore will I call upon Him as long as I live.―I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Praise waiteth for Thee, O God, in Sion.―They rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.―Whoso offereth praise glorifieth Me.―Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.―Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

04.28 Evening:

(Psalm 71:14)But I will hope continually, and will yet praise Thee more and more.

(Philippians 3:12)Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.--(Hebrews 6:1)Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,--(Proverbs 4:18)But the path of the just is as the shining Light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect Day.

(Psalm 116:1,2)I love the Lord, because He hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because He hath inclined His ear unto me, therefore will I call upon Him as long as I live.--(Psalm 34:1) I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

(Psalm 65:1)Praise waiteth for Thee, O God, in Sion: and unto Thee shall the vow be performed.--(Revelation 4:8)And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.--(Psalm 50:23)Whoso offereth praise glorifieth Me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.--(I Thessalonians 5:16-18)Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.--(Philippians 4:4)Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is
gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:30 As for God, His Way is perfect: the Word of the Lord is tried: He is a buckler to all those that trust in Him.

The Word for the day--
I Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"the greatest of these is charity."

I Corinthians 13:4-7 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

I Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

Again, the Word for the day
--I Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

04.28 Morning:

Behold the Lamb of God.

It is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when He cometh into the world, He saith, Sacrifice and offering Thou wouldest not, but a body hast Thou prepared Me: in burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin Thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the Book it is written of Me,) to do Thy will, O God.―He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a Lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

Ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, . . . but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot: . . . manifest in these last times for you, who by Him do believe in God, . . . that your faith and hope might be in God.

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

Joh 1:29 Heb 10:4-7 Isa 53:7 1Pe 1:18-21 Re 5:12

04.28 Morning:

(John 1:29)The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

(Hebrews 10:4-7)For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when He cometh into the world, He saith, Sacrifice and offering Thou wouldest not, but a body hast Thou prepared Me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin Thou hast had no pleasure. (I Peter 1:18-21)Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, who by Him do believe in God, that raised Him up from the dead, and gave Him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

(Revelation 5:12)Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

Philippians 4:8b " . . . think on these things"

Psalm 72:17-19 His Name shall endure for ever: His Name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in Him: all nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be His Glorious Name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen.
