Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

11.04 Evening:

The Prince of Peace.

He shall judge Thy people with Righteousness, and Thy poor with judgment. The mountains shall bring Peace to the people, and the little hills, by Righteousness. . . . He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth. In His days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.―Glory to God . . . on earth Peace, good will toward men.

Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the Dayspring from on High hath visited us, to give Light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the Way of Peace.―Peace by Jesus Christ: (He is Lord of all.)

These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have Peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.―Peace I leave with you, My Peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.―The Peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Isa 9:6 Ps 72:2,3,6,7 Lu 2:14 1:78,79 Ac 10:36 Joh 16:33 14:27 Php 4:7

(John 5:39)

Judges 6:36-40 And Gideon said unto God, If Thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as Thou hast said, Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that Thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as Thou hast said. And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. And Gideon said unto God, Let not Thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray Thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, . . . And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water

"dew be on the fleece only"

Proverbs 19:12 The King's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but
His favour is as dew upon the grass.---Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

John 1:29 ¶The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.---Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a Lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers [Hebrew root of "fleece"] is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

"be
dry upon all the earth beside"

Isaiah 53:2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a Root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.

John 7:37-39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of Living Water. (But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

" and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water
"

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Colossians 2:9 For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Isaiah 53:10-12 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His Soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see of the travail of His Soul, and shall be satisfied: by His Knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His Soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Again . . .Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground."

"dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground."

John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

II Corinthians 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.

II Corinthians 5:21 For He hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the Righteousness of God in Him.

John 1:16 And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour My Spirit upon thy seed, and My blessing upon thine offspring:

Hosea 14:5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.

II Corinthians 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.

Again---

Judges 6:36-40 And Gideon said unto God, If Thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as Thou hast said, Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that Thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as Thou hast said. The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

The Word for the day--
I John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world."

John 3:16,17 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 6:40 And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have Everlasting Life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 12:46-50 I am come a Light into the world, that whosoever believeth on Me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear My Words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth Me, and receiveth not My Words, hath One that judgeth him: the Word that I have spoken, the Same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of Myself; but the Father which sent Me, He gave Me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.  And I know that His commandment is Life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto Me, so I speak.

Again, the Word for the day
--I John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

11.04 Morning:

Now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations.

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.―The exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him.―Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of Righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

We have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.―For in that He Himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succour them that are tempted.―God is Faithful, Who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able.
