Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

02.24 Evening:

Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?

I know, O Lord, that Thy judgments are right, and that Thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.--O Lord, Thou art our Father; we are the clay, and Thou our Potter; and we all are the work of Thy hand.--It is the Lord: let Him do what seemeth Him good.

Righteous art Thou, O Lord, when I plead with Thee: yet let me talk with Thee of Thy judgments.

He shall sit as a Refiner and Purifier of silver--Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth.--It is enough for the disciple that he be as his Master, and the servant as his Lord. If they have called the Master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of His household?--Though He were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which He suffered;

But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.--These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

02.24 Evening:

(Job 2:10)But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

(Psalm 119:75)I know, O Lord, that Thy judgments are right, and that Thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.--(Isaiah 64:8)But now, O Lord, Thou art our Father; we are the clay, and Thou our Potter; and we all are the work of Thy hand.--(I Samuel 3:18)And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth Him good.

(Jeremiah 12:1)Righteous art Thou, O Lord, when I plead with Thee: yet let me talk with Thee of Thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?

(Malachi 3:3)And He shall sit as a Refiner and Purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.--(Hebrews 12:6)For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth.--(Matthew 10:25)It is enough for the disciple that he be as his Master, and the servant as his Lord. If they have called the Master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?--(Hebrews 5:8)Though He were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which He suffered;

(I Peter 4:13)But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.--(Revelation 7:14)And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with Truth, and having on the breastplate of Righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace; above all, taking the shield of Faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of Salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. . . . that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."

Romans 5:1-5 Therefore being justified by Faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by Whom also we have access by Faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

I Corinthians 15:1-6 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures: and that He was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: after that, He was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

I Thessalonians 3:5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your Faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

Galatians 5:26- 6:1-3 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are Spiritual, restore such an one in the Spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

Ephesians 4:25-27 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man Truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: neither give place to the devil.

II Corinthians 2:10,11 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the Person of Christ; lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

I Peter 5:6-11 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the Faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, Who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Romans 16:27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.
I Peter 5:11 To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:1,2 I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my Rock, and my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my Buckler, and the Horn of my salvation, and my high Tower.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 33:20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord: He is our help and our shield.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"Our soul waiteth for the Lord: He is our help and our shield."

I Peter 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to Him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

Hebrews 10:36-39 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by Faith: but if any man draw back, My Soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Psalm 115:11 Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord: He is their help and their shield.

Psalm 3:3 But Thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Hebrews 13:5,6 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my Helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Again, the Word for the day
--Psalm 33:20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord: He is our help and our shield.

02.24 Morning:

Thus saith the Lord God; I will yet for this be enquired of.

Yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.--This is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He heareth us: and if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him.--If any of you lack Wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.--I am the Lord thy God, Which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.--Men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry.--The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.--Ye shall ask in My Name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the Father Himself loveth you, because ye have loved Me.--Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
