Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

09.19 Evening:

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my Help. My Help cometh from the Lord.

As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about His people from henceforth even for ever.

Unto Thee lift I up mine eyes, O Thou that dwellest in the Heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that He have mercy upon us.―Because Thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of Thy wings will I rejoice.

O our God, wilt Thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon Thee.―Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord; for He shall pluck my feet out of the net.―Our Help is in the Name of the Lord, Who made Heaven and earth.

Luke 22:31-34,61,62

Luke 22:31-34
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: but I have prayed for thee, that thy Faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. And he said unto Him, Lord, I am ready to go with Thee, both into prison, and to death. And He said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest Me. . . . Luke 22:61,62 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the Word of the Lord, how He had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny Me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"I have prayed for thee, that thy Faith fail not"

Galatians 2:16,20 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law, but by the Faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the Faith of Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified. . . . I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the Life which I now live in the flesh I live by the Faith of the Son of God, Who loved me, and gave Himself for me.

Psalm 69:6-9 Let not them that wait on Thee, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed for My sake: let not those that seek Thee be confounded for My sake, O God of Israel. Because for Thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered My Face. I am become a Stranger unto My brethren, and an Alien unto My mother's children. For the zeal of Thine House hath eaten Me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached Thee are fallen upon Me.

John 17:11-16 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to Thee. Holy Father, keep through Thine Own Name those whom Thou hast given Me, that they may be One, as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Thy Name: those that Thou gavest Me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to Thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them Thy Word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Isaiah 53:11,12 He shall see of the travail of His Soul, and shall be satisfied: by His Knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His Soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, Who is even at the right hand of God, Who also maketh intercession for us.

Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.

"the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter
"

Psalm 25:16,18 Turn Thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted. . . . Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins.

Psalm 69:16 Hear me, O Lord; for Thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies.

Micah 7:19 He will turn again, He will have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; and Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

"And Peter remembered the Word of the Lord . .  . And Peter went out, and wept bitterly."

John 14:16,17,26 And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of Truth; Whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. . . But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

II Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

"when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren"

I Peter 5:6-11 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the Faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, Who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Romans 16:27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh
is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 25:8,9 Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will He teach sinners in the Way. The meek will He guide in Judgment: and the meek will He teach His Way.

The Word for the day--
Galatians 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law."

I Timothy 1:8-11 But we know that the Law is good, if a man use it lawfully; knowing this, that the Law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; according to the Glorious Gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

Romans 7:12-14 Wherefore the Law is Holy, and the commandment Holy, and Just, and Good. Was then that which is Good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is Good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that the Law is Spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Galatians 3:13,14 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the Law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through Faith.

Romans 8:1-14 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the Law of sin and death. For what the Law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His Own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the Righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be Spiritually minded is Life and Peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is Life because of Righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Again, the Word for the day--Galatians 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the Law.

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

09.19 Morning:

The God of all grace.

I will proclaim the Name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious.―He is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a Ransom.―Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through Faith in His blood, to declare His Righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.―Grace and Truth came by Jesus Christ.

By grace are ye saved through Faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the Gift of God.―Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.―Unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the Gift of Christ.―As every man hath received the Gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.―He giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
