Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

05.12 Evening:

Reproach hath broken My heart.

Is not this the carpenter's Son?―Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?―Say we not well that Thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?―He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.―We know that this Man is a sinner.―He deceiveth the people.―This Man blasphemeth.―Behold a Man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a Friend of publicans and sinners.

It is enough for the disciple that he be as his Master, and the servant as his Lord. If they have called the Master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of His household?―This is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. . . . For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth: Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judgeth righteously.―If ye be reproached for the Name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part He is evil spoken of, but on your part He is glorified.

05.12 Evening:

(Psalm 69:20)Reproach hath broken My heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

(Matthew 13:55)Is not this the carpenter's Son? is not His mother called Mary? and His brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?--(John 1:46)And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.--(John 8:48)Then answered the Jews, and said unto Him, Say we not well that Thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?--(Matthew 9:34)But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.--(John 9:24)Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this Man is a sinner.--(John 7:12)And there was much murmuring among the people concerning Him: for some said, He is a good Man: others said, Nay; but He deceiveth the people.--(Matthew 9:3)And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This Man blasphemeth.--(Matthew 11:19)The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a Man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

(Matthew 10:25)It is enough for the disciple that he be as his Master, and the servant as his Lord. If they have called the Master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of His household?--(I Peter 2:19)For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.--(I Peter 2:21-23)For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth: Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judgeth righteously:

(I Peter 4:14)If ye be reproached for the Name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part He is evil spoken of, but on your part He is glorified.

II Peter 3

II Peter 3

This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: that ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the Word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same Word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the Wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other Scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

The Lord is gracious

The Lord is gracious,

and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

The Word for the day--
Ephesians 2:4-7 But God, Who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come He might shew the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

05.12 Morning:

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

The Love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.―Ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.―He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself.

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.―In Whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.―That in the ages to come He might shew the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
