Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

10.09 Evening:

The Words of the Lord are pure Words.

Thy Word is very pure: therefore Thy servant loveth it.―The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.―Every Word of God is pure: He is a Shield unto them that put their trust in Him. Add thou not unto His Words, lest He reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.―I will meditate in Thy precepts, and have respect unto Thy ways.―Brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.―As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby.

We are not as many, which corrupt the Word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.―Nor handling the Word of God deceitfully.

(Psalm 119:140)Thy Word is very pure: therefore Thy servant loveth it.--(Psalm 19:8)The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.--(Proverbs 30:5,6)Every Word of God is pure: He is a Shield unto them that put their trust in Him. Add thou not unto His Words, lest He reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

(Psalm 119:11)Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.--(Psalm 119:15)I will meditate in Thy precepts, and have respect unto Thy ways.--(Philippians 4:8)Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.--(I Peter 2:2)As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby:

(II Corinthians 2:17)For we are not as many, which corrupt the Word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.--(II Corinthians 4:2)But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the Word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the Truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

Psalm 94 -- "O LORD God, to Whom vengeance belongeth"

O Lord God, to Whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to Whom vengeance belongeth, shew Thyself. Lift up Thyself, Thou Judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud. Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph? How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves? They break in pieces Thy people, O Lord, and afflict Thine heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless. Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it. Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall He not hear? He that formed the eye, shall He not see? He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not He correct? He that teacheth man knowledge, shall not He know? The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

Blessed is the Man Whom Thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest Him out of Thy Law; That Thou mayest give Him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked. For the Lord will not cast off His people, neither will He forsake His inheritance. But judgment shall return unto Righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it. Who will rise up for Me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for Me against the workers of iniquity? Unless the Lord had been My help, My Soul had almost dwelt in silence. When I said, My foot slippeth; Thy mercy, O Lord, held Me up. In the multitude of My thoughts within Me Thy comforts delight My Soul. Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with Thee, which frameth mischief by a law? They gather themselves together against the Soul of the Righteous, and condemn the Innocent blood. But the Lord is My defence; and My God is the Rock of My refuge. And He shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.

I Timothy 6:12-16
Fight the good fight of Faith, lay hold on eternal Life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, Who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, Who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: which in His times He shall shew, Who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the Light which no man can approach unto; Whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to Whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my Light and my Salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the Strength of my Life; of whom shall I be afraid?

The Word for the day--
Psalm 28:7,8 The Lord is my Strength and my Shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise Him. The Lord is their Strength, and He is the saving Strength of His Anointed.

10.09 Morning:

Thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful.

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance....The longsuffering of our Lord is salvation.

For this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to Life Everlasting.―Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have Hope.

Despisest thou the riches of His goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?―Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth Him of the evil.

(Nehemiah 9:17)And refused to obey, neither were mindful of Thy wonders that Thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but Thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.

(II Peter 3:9)The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance....(II Peter 3:15)And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the Wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

(I Timothy 1:16)Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to Life Everlasting.--(Romans 15:4)For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have Hope.

(Romans 2:4)Or despisest thou the riches of His goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?--(Joel 2:13)And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth Him of the evil.

I Timothy 4:15,16 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Psalm 72:17-19 His Name shall endure for ever: His Name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in Him: all nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be His Glorious Name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen.
