Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

08.05 Evening:

Thy will be done.

O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.―Not as I will, but as thou wilt.―Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.

We know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Ye know not what ye ask.―He gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.―These things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

I would have you without carefulness.―Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Mt 26:42 Jer 10:23 Mt 26:39 Ps 131:2 Ro 8:26,27 Mt 20:22 Ps 106:15 1Co 10:6 1Co 7:32 Isa 26:3

08.05 Evening:

(Matthew 26:42)He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

(Jeremiah 10:23)O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.--(Matthew 26:39)And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.--(Psalm 131:2)Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.

(Romans 8:26,27)Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

(Matthew 20:22)But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.--(Psalm 106:15)And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.--(I Corinthians 10:6)Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

(I Corinthians 7:32)But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:--(Isaiah 26:3)Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Mt 26:42 Jer 10:23 Mt 26:39 Ps 131:2 Ro 8:26,27 Mt 20:22 Ps 106:15 1Co 10:6 1Co 7:32 Isa 26:3

Romans 5:1,2: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 16:27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.
I Peter 5:11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 25:1,2 Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in Thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 123:1-4 A Song of degrees.
Unto Thee lift I up mine eyes, O Thou that dwellest in the Heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that He have mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"Unto Thee lift I up mine eyes, O Thou that dwellest in the Heavens."

Hebrews 12:1-4 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race ["conflict" Phil 1:28; Col 2:1; "fight" 1 Tim 6:12; "contention"1Thes 2;2] that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith; Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, that is passed into the Heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

"our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that He have mercy upon us"

II Thessalonians 3:5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

"Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us"

Psalm 147:11 The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that hope in His mercy.

Jude 1:21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto Eternal Life.

"Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud."

Psalm 44:9-16, 22-26 But Thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies. Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen. Thou sellest Thy people for nought, and dost not increase Thy wealth by their price. Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people. My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger. . . . Yea, for Thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Awake, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever. Wherefore hidest Thou Thy Face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression? For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. Arise for our help, and redeem us for Thy mercies' sake.

Again, the Word for the day--Psalm 123:1-4 A Song of degrees.

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

08.05 Morning:
Walk in newness of Life.

As ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to Righteousness unto Holiness.―I beseech you . . ., brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a Living sacrifice, Holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.

If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.―In Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy.―This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind.―But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that ye have heard Him, and have been taught by Him, as the Truth is in Jesus.―Put on the new Man, which after God is created in Righteousness and true Holiness.
