Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

02.22 Evening:

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

There arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And He was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for Thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.--He giveth His beloved sleep.

And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.--Absent from the body, . . . present with the Lord.

02.22 Evening:

(Proverbs 3:24)When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

(Mark 4:37,38)And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And He was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake Him, and say unto Him, Master, carest Thou not that we perish?

(Philippians 4:6,7)Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

(Psalm 4:8)I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for Thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.--(Psalm 127:2)It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so He giveth His Beloved sleep.

(Acts 7:59,60)And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.--(II Corinthians 5:8)We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

" the salvation of your souls"

Psalm 66:16
Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what He hath done for my soul.

I Peter 1:3-9
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively Hope by the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an Inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in Heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through Faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: that the trial of your Faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in Whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: receiving the end of your Faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Psalm 103:1-5 A Psalm of David.
Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His Holy Name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,

and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:1,2 I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my Rock, and my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my Buckler, and the Horn of my salvation, and my high Tower.

The Word for the day--
Proverbs 30:5 Every Word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"Every word of God is pure"

John 1:1-4,14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men. . . . And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God.

Deuteronomy 8:3 And He humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.

"He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him."

Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of Faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Psalm 3:3 But Thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

Psalm 7:10 My defence ["shield" Prov 30:5] is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.

Psalm 18:1,2,30,35 I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my Rock, and my fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my buckler ["shield" Prov 30:5] and the Horn of my salvation, and my high Tower. . . .As for God, His Way is perfect: the Word of the Lord is tried: He is a buckler ["shield" Prov 30:5] to all those that trust in Him. . . .Thou hast also given me the shield of Thy salvation: and Thy right hand hath holden me up, and Thy gentleness hath made me great.

Again, the Word for the day
--Proverbs 30:5 Every Word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him.

02.22 Morning:

What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall He teach in the Way that He shall choose.

The Light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of Light.

Thy Word is a Lamp unto my feet, and a Light unto my path.--Thine ears shall hear a Word behind thee, saying, This is the Way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.--I will instruct thee and teach thee in the Way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with Mine eye. Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about. Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

O Lord, I know that the Way of Man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
