Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

03.27 Evening:

God is faithful.

God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?--The Lord sware and will not repent.

God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath: that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for Refuge to lay hold upon the Hope set before us:--Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to Him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

I know Whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.--Faithful is He that calleth you, Who also will do it.--All the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

03.27 Evening:

(I Corinthians 10:13)There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, Who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

(Numbers 23:19)God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?--(Hebrews 7:21)(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by Him that said unto Him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

(Hebrews 6:17,18)Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath: that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for Refuge to lay hold upon the Hope set before us:--(I Peter 4:19)Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to Him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

(II Timothy 1:12)For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know Whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.--(I Thessalonians 5:24)Faithful is He that calleth you, Who also will do it.--(II Corinthians 1:20)For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,

and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:3 I will call upon the Lord, Who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

The Word for the day--
I Thessalonians 5:8-10 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of Faith and Love; and for an helmet, the Hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"But let us, who are of the Day, be sober,"

II Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a Light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the Day Star arise in your hearts:

I Thessalonians 5:5-7 Ye are all the children of Light, and the children of the Day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

"putting on the breastplate of Faith and Love;"

I Timothy 1:14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with Faith and Love which is in Christ Jesus.

"and for an helmet, the Hope of salvation.
For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us,"

Lamentations 3:26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

I John 3:1-3 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is. And every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth His Love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

"that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him."

I Thessalonians 4:15-18 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the Voice of the Archangel, and with the Trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Again, the Word for the day
--I Thessalonians 5:8-10 But let us, who are of the Day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of Faith and Love; and for an helmet, the Hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

03.27 Morning:

To him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the Faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of Righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.

Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
