Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

11.07 Evening:

Behold, we count them happy which endure.

We glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, Hope: and Hope maketh not ashamed; because the Love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.―No chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable Fruit of Righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.--My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your Faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing....Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of Life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him.―Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me... For when I am weak, then am I strong.

11.07 Evening:

(James 5:11)Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

(Romans 5:3-5)And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, Hope: and Hope maketh not ashamed; because the Love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.--(Hebrews 12:11)Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable Fruit of Righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.--(James 1:2-4)My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your Faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing...(James 1:12)Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of Life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him.--(II Corinthians 12:9,10)And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My Strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

The Word for the day--
I Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures:

Here is the entire sentence with a little immediate context---

I Corinthians 15:1-11 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures: and that He was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: after that, He was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, He was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all He was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and His grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved,"

Romans 5:1-5 Therefore being justified by Faith, we have Peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by Whom also we have access by Faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in Hope of the Glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and Hope maketh not ashamed; because the Love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

"if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain."

II Peter 1:1-11 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like Precious Faith with us through the Righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the Knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as His Divine Power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto Life and godliness, through the Knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the Divine Nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your Faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the Knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the Everlasting Kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

"how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures"

Isaiah 53 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the Arm of the Lord revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a Root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no Beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected of men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our Peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a Lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the Living: for the transgression of My people was He stricken. And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death; because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His Soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see of the travail of His Soul, and shall be satisfied: by His Knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His Soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Luke 22:37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in Me, And He was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning Me have an end.

"and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures:"

Isaiah 53:9 And He made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death; because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

Hosea 6:2 After two days will He revive us: in the third day He will raise us up, and we shall Live in His sight.

Psalm 16:5-11 The Lord is the Portion of Mine Inheritance and of My cup: Thou maintainest My lot. The lines are fallen unto Me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly Heritage. I will bless the Lord, Who hath given Me counsel: My reins also instruct Me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before Me: because He is at My right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore My heart is glad, and My glory rejoiceth: My flesh also shall rest in hope. For Thou wilt not leave My Soul in hell; neither wilt Thou suffer Thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew Me the path of Life: in Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.

Again, the Word for the day--I Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures:

11.07 Morning:

Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!

O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.―Oh how great is Thy goodness, which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee!

This people have I formed for Myself; they shall shew forth My praise.―Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the Glory of His Grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the Beloved....That we should be to the praise of His Glory, who first trusted in Christ.

How great is His Goodness, and how great is His Beauty!―The Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all His works. All Thy works shall praise Thee, O Lord; and Thy saints shall bless Thee. They shall speak of the Glory of Thy Kingdom, and talk of Thy Power; to make known to the sons of men His Mighty Acts, and the Glorious Majesty of His Kingdom.
