Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

05.08 Evening:

Ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence.

Thou . . . hast made us unto our God kings and priests.―The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations. And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the Lord your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.

I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye Me in vain.―Their voice was heard, and their prayer came up to His holy dwelling place, even unto Heaven.―The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry.―Pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a Righteous Man availeth much.

Come, Lord Jesus.―Make no tarrying, O my God.―Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the Day of God.

05.08 Evening:

(Isaiah 62:6)I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence,

(Revelation 5:9,10)And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the Book, and to open the seals thereof: for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.--(Numbers 10:8,9)And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations. And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the Lord your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.

(Isaiah 45:19)I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye Me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.--(II Chronicles 30:27)Then the priests the Levites arose and blessed the people: and their voice was heard, and their prayer came up to His holy dwelling place, even unto Heaven.--(Psalm 34:15)The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry.--(James 5:16)Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a Righteous Man availeth much.

(Revelation 22:20)He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.--(Psalm 40:17)But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: Thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.--(II Peter 3:12)Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the Day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

I Samuel 22:2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him [David]; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

II Thessalonians 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto Him, . . .

I Samuel 22:2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him [David]; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

Hebrews 2:10 For it became Him [the Lord Jesus Christ], for Whom are all things, and by Whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the Captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

I Samuel 22:2 And every one that was in distress[cp. Ps 107:17-20], and every one that was in debt [cp. Matt 6:12], and every one that was discontented [cp. Rom 3:10-14] gathered themselves unto him [David]; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

I Samuel 22:2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented ["bitter"Job 3:20], gathered themselves unto him [David]; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

Luke 18:36-43 And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant. And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. And he cried, saying, Jesus, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto Him: and when he was come near, He asked him, saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.

The Lord is gracious

The Lord is gracious,

and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

The Word for the day--
II Thessalonians 1:11,12 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of Faith with power: that the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Here is some immediate context--

II Thessalonians 1:1-12 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your Faith groweth exceedingly, and the Charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the Kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; and to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power; when He shall come to be glorified in His saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that Day. Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of Faith with power: that the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Again, the Word for the day--II Thessalonians 1:11,12 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of Faith with power: that the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

05.08 Morning:

It pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief.

Now is My soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. Father, glorify Thy Name. Then came there a Voice from Heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.―Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from Me: nevertheless not My will, but Thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto Him from Heaven, strengthening Him.

Being found in fashion as a Man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.―Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My Life, that I might take it again.―For I came down from Heaven, not to do Mine Own will, but the will of Him that sent Me.―The cup which My Father hath given Me, shall I not drink it?

The Father hath not left Me alone; for I do always those things that please Him.―My Beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.―Mine Elect, in Whom My soul delighteth.
