Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

06.18 Evening:

Faith as a grain of mustard seed.

Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.―God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.―Gideon . . . feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, . . . did it by night. . . . Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, . . . Let me prove, I pray thee, . . . And God did so.

Thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.―Who hath despised the day of small things?

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly.―Lord, Increase our faith.―I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.

Mt 17:20 Jdg 4:8,23 6:27,36,39,40 Re 3:8 Zec 4:10 2Th 1:3 Lu 17:5 Ho 14:5,6

06.18 Evening:

(Matthew 17:20)And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

(Judges 4:8)And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.--(Judges 4:23)So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.--(Judges 6:27)Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.--(Judges 6:36)And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,--(Judges 6:39,40)And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

(Revelation 3:8)I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.--(Zechariah 4:10)For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

(II Thessalonians 1:3)We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;--(Luke 17:5)And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.--(Hosea 14:5,6)I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.

Isaiah 12 . . . "the Holy One of Israel"

Isaiah 12

And in that day Thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise Thee: though Thou wast angry with Me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortedst Me. Behold, God is My salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is My strength and My song; He also is become My salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the Wells of Salvation.

And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon His Name, declare His doings among the people, make mention that His Name is exalted. Sing unto the Lord; for He hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

Psalm 16
Michtam of David.

Preserve Me, O God: for in Thee do I put My trust. O My Soul, Thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art My Lord: My goodness extendeth not to Thee; but to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all My delight. Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into My lips. The Lord is the portion of Mine inheritance and of My cup: Thou maintainest My lot. The lines are fallen unto Me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless the Lord, Who hath given Me counsel: My reins also instruct Me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before Me: because He is at My right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore My heart is glad, and My glory rejoiceth: My flesh also shall rest in Hope. For Thou wilt not leave My Soul in hell; neither wilt Thou suffer Thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew Me the path of Life: in Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Acts 2:25-27

For David speaketh concerning Him, I foresaw the Lord always before My Face, for He is on My right hand, that I should not be moved: therefore did My heart rejoice, and My tongue was glad; moreover also My flesh shall rest in Hope: because Thou wilt not leave My Soul in hell, neither wilt Thou suffer Thine Holy One to see corruption.

Psalm 89

Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the Light of Thy countenance. In Thy Name shall they rejoice all the day: and in Thy Righteousness shall they be exalted. For Thou art the Glory of their Strength: and in Thy favour our Horn shall be exalted. For the Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our King.

Isaiah 47:4

As for our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is His Name, the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 54:5

For thy Maker is thine Husband [2 Cor 11:2]; the Lord of hosts is His Name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 108:4 For Thy mercy is great above the heavens: and Thy Truth reacheth unto the clouds.

The Word for the day--
Proverbs 20:28 Mercy and truth preserve the King: and His throne is upholden by mercy.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"the King"

John 19:14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he [Pilate] saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! . . .John 19:19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

I Timothy 6:13-16 I give thee charge in the sight of God, Who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, Who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: Which in His times He shall shew, Who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the Light which no man can approach unto; Whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to Whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

"His Throne is upholden by mercy."

Psalm 89:14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of Thy Throne: mercy and truth shall go before Thy Face.

Isaiah 16:5 And in mercy shall the Throne be established: and He shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.

Exodus 25:22 And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a Great High Priest, that is passed into the Heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the Throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Again, the Word for the day
--Proverbs 20:28 Mercy and truth preserve the King: and His throne is upholden by mercy.

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

06.18 Morning:

Thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; . . . And there I will meet with thee.

The Way into the Holiest of all was not yet made manifest.―Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

Having . . . brethren, boldness to enter into the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a New and Living Way, which He hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, His flesh; . . . let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of Faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.―Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation [mercy seat] through Faith in His blood, to declare His Righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.―Through Him we both have access by One Spirit unto the Father.
