Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

05.04 Evening:

I have glorified Thee on the earth.

My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.―I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

Wist ye not that I must be about My Father's business? And they understood not the saying which He spake unto them.―This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.―Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.―Thou art My Beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased.―All bare Him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth.

Thou art worthy to take the Book, and to open the seals thereof: for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

05.04 Evening:

(John 17:4)I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do.

(John 4:34)Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.--(John 9:4)I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

(Luke 2:49,50)And He said unto them, How is it that ye sought Me? wist ye not that I must be about My Father's business? And they understood not the saying which He spake unto them.--(John 11:4)When Jesus heard that, He said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.--(John 11:40)Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

(Luke 2:52)And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.--(Luke 3:22)And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a Voice came from Heaven, which said, Thou art My Beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased.--(Luke 4:22)And all bare Him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

(Revelation 5:9,10)And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the Book, and to open the seals thereof: for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Psalm 45

To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, for the sons of Korah, Maschil, A Song of loves.

My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the King: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into Thy lips: therefore God hath blessed Thee for ever. Gird Thy Sword upon Thy thigh, O most Mighty, with Thy glory and Thy majesty. And in Thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and Thy right hand shall teach Thee terrible things. Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the King's enemies; whereby the people fall under Thee.

Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of Thy Kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows. All Thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made Thee glad. Kings' daughters were among Thy honourable women: upon Thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.

Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; so shall the King greatly desire thy beauty: for He is thy Lord; and worship thou Him.
And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat Thy favour. The King's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold. She shall be brought unto the King in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto Thee. With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the King's palace. Instead of Thy fathers shall be thy children, whom Thou mayest make princes in all the earth. I will make Thy Name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise Thee for ever and ever.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,

and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 33:4,5 For the Word of the Lord is right; and all His works are done in truth. He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

05.04 Morning:

Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear.

In the day when I cried Thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.―Whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.

Hide not Thy Face far from me; put not Thy servant away in anger: Thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.―Be not Thou far from me, O Lord: O my Strength, haste Thee to help me.

Ah Lord God! behold, Thou hast made the Heaven and the earth by Thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for Thee.―Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in Whom we trust that He will yet deliver us.―Shall not God avenge His Own elect, which cry day and night unto Him, though He bear long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily.

Isa 59:1 Ps 138:3 Da 9:21 Ps 27:9 22:19 Jer 32:17 2Co 1:10 Lu 18:7,8
