Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

03.17 Evening:

In all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food [
the lust of the flesh], and that it was pleasant to the eyes [the lust of the eyes], and a tree to be desired to make one wise [the pride of life], she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

When the tempter came to Him, he said, If Thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread
[the lust of the flesh]. But He answered and said, It is Written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.--The devil . . . sheweth Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them [the lust of the eyes and the pride of life]. . . .Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan.

In that He Himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succour them that are tempted.

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation.

03.17 Evening:

(Hebrews 4:15)For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted ["proved" Jn 6:6;"tried" Rev 2:10] like as we are, yet without sin.

(Genesis 3:6)And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.--(I John 2:16)For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

(Matthew 4:3,4)And when the tempter came to Him, he said, If Thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But He answered and said, It is Written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. . . .
(Matthew 4:8)Again, the devil taketh Him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; . . .(Matthew 4:10)Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is Written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.--(I John 2:16)For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

(Hebrews 2:18)For in that He Himself hath suffered being tempted ["proved" Jn 6:6;
"tried" Rev 2:10], He is able to succour them that are tempted ["proved" Jn 6:6;"tried" Rev 2:10].

(James 1:12)Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of Life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him.

Romans 16:27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.
I Peter 5:11 To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:3 I will call upon the Lord, Who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry came before Him, even into His ears.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry came before Him, even into His ears."

Hebrews 5:6-10 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Again, the Word for the day
--Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry came before Him, even into His ears.

03.17 Morning:

He shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

Ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot:...Who His Own Self bare our sins in His Own body on the tree.

He hath made us accepted in the Beloved.

As lively stones, . . . built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.--I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever.
