Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

07.20 Evening:

He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

The joy of the Lord is your strength.―The Kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.―Be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

By Him . . . let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His Name.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.―Sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing.―We glory in tribulations also.

Pr 15:15 Ne 8:10 Ro 14:17 Eph 5:18-20 Heb 13:15 Hab 3:17,18 2Co 6:10 Ro 5:3

07.20 Evening:

(Proverbs 15:15)All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

(Nehemiah 8:10)Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.--(Romans 14:17)For the Kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.--(Ephesians 5:18-20)And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

(Hebrews 13:15)By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His Name.

(Habakkuk 3:17,18)Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.--(II Corinthians 6:10)As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.--(Romans 5:3)And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.

The Word for the day--
I Peter 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Here is some immediate context--I Peter 2:20-25 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth: Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judgeth righteously: Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto Righteousness: by Whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls."

Isaiah 53

Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected of men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned
every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a Lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of My people was He stricken. And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death; because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His Soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Again, the Word for the day--I Peter 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

07.20 Morning:

They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

He is despised and rejected of men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.―In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Such an High Priest became us, Who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners.―That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation.

Jesus of Nazareth . . . Who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him.―As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of Faith.

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.―Ye are the light of the world. A City that is set on an hill cannot be hid. . . . Let your Light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.
