Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

09.06 Evening:

Watchman, what of the night?

It is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of Light.

Learn a parable of the fig tree; when his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: so likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. . . Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away.

I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in His Word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Watch . . ., for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Isa 21:11 Ro 13:11,12 Mt 24:32,33,35 Ps 130:5,6 Re 22:20 Mt 25:13

09.06 Evening:

(Isaiah 21:11)The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?

(Romans 13:11,12)And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of Light.

(Matthew 24:32,33)Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. . . .(Matthew 24:35)Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away.

(Psalm 130:5,6) I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in His Word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

(Revelation 22:20)He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

(Matthew 25:13)Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 25:8,9 Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will He teach sinners in the Way. The meek will He guide in Judgment: and the meek will He teach His Way.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 92:13-15 Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; to shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Hear the entire Psalm--

"Thou, LORD, art Most High for evermore"

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; to shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him."

Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Hebrews 3:5,6 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; but Christ as a Son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Psalm 52:8 But I am like a green ["flourishing" Ps 92:14] olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.

III John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth [cp.Jer 31:12].

Deuteronomy 32:1-4 Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Again, the Word for the day--Psalm 92:13-15 Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; to shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

09.06 Morning:

Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the Heavens.

Who is like unto the Lord our God, Who dwelleth on High, Who humbleth Himself to behold the things that are in Heaven, and in the earth!―Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up My soul.―I stretch forth My hands unto Thee: My soul thirsteth after Thee, as a thirsty land. . . . Hide not Thy Face from Me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Cause Me to hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in Thee do I trust: cause me to know the Way wherein I should walk; for I lift up My soul unto Thee.

Because Thy lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise Thee. Thus will I bless Thee while I live: I will lift up My hands in Thy Name.―Rejoice the soul of Thy Servant: for unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up My soul. For Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon Thee.

Whatsoever ye shall ask in My Name, that will I do.

Psalm 92 -- "Thou, LORD, art Most High for evermore"

A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day.

It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: to shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound. For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands. O Lord, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep. A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.

When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever: but thou, Lord, art most high for evermore. For, lo, thine enemies, O Lord, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered. But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me. The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing ["green" 52:8]; to shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Hebrews 1:8-13 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: they shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; and as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

Psalm 110 A Psalm of David.
The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

Romans 11:33-36 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
