Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

05.24 Evening:

I will go and return to My place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek My Face.

Your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His Face from you.―My Beloved had withdrawn Himself, and was gone: . . . I sought Him, but I could not find Him; I called Him, but He gave me no answer.―I hid Me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him.―Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when He led thee by the Way?

He arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.―I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for Mine anger is turned away.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

05.24 Evening:

(Hosea 5:15)I will go and return to My place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek My Face: in their affliction they will seek Me early.

(Isaiah 59:2)But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His Face from you, that He will not hear.--(Song of Solomon 5:6)I opened to my Beloved; but my Beloved had withdrawn Himself, and was gone: my soul failed when He spake: I sought Him, but I could not find Him; I called Him, but He gave me no answer.--(Isaiah 57:17,18)For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid Me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.--(Jeremiah 2:17)Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when He led thee by the Way?

(Luke 15:20)And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.--(Hosea 14:4)I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for Mine anger is turned away from him.

(I John 1:9)If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

A Great Mystery . . . joined unto the Lord

Ephesians 5:22-33

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the Head of the church: and He is the Saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: for we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

This is a Great Mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

1Corinthians 6:17

. . . he that is joined unto the Lord is One Spirit.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

The Word for the day--
Colossians 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all Wisdom and Spiritual Understanding;

Here is the entire sentence--

Colossians 1:9-17 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all Wisdom and Spiritual Understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the Knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; giving thanks unto the Father, Which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in Light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son: in Whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the Image of the Invisible God, the Firstborn of every creature [cp.Col 1:18]: for by Him were all things created, that are in Heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: and He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.

Again, the Word for the day--Colossians 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all Wisdom and Spiritual Understanding;

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

05.24 Morning:

Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the Day of Redemption.

The Love of the Spirit.―The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost.―In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the Angel of His presence saved them: in His love and in His pity He redeemed them; and He bare them, and carried them all the days of old. But they rebelled, and vexed His Holy Spirit: therefore He was turned to be their enemy, and He fought against them.

Hereby know we that we dwell in Him, and He in us, because He hath given us of His Spirit.―After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession.―This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities.

05.24 Morning:

(Ephesians 4:30)And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the Day of Redemption.

(Romans 15:30)Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the Love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;--(John 14:26)But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.--(Isaiah 63:9,10)In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the Angel of His presence saved them: in His love and in His pity He redeemed them; and He bare them, and carried them all the days of old. But they rebelled, and vexed His Holy Spirit: therefore He was turned to be their enemy, and He fought against them.

(I John 4:13)Hereby know we that we dwell in Him, and He in us, because He hath given us of His Spirit.--(Ephesians 1:13,14)In Whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your salvation: in Whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.--(Galatians 5:16,17)This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

(Romans 8:26)Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
