Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

09.20 Evening:

Poor, yet making many rich.

Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.―Of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.―My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.―God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.

Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in Faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which He hath promised to them that love Him?―Not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.

We have this Treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the Power may be of God, and not of us.

09.20 Evening:

(II Corinthians 6:10)As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

(II Corinthians 8:9)For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.--(John 1:16)And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.--(Philippians 4:19)But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.--(II Corinthians 9:8)And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

(James 2:5)Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in Faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which He hath promised to them that love Him?--(I Corinthians 1:26,27)For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

(II Corinthians 4:7)But we have this Treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh
is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 25:8,9 Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will He teach sinners in the Way. The meek will He guide in Judgment: and the meek will He teach His Way.

The Word for the day--
I Timothy 1:15,16 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief ["first" 1:16]. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first ["chief" 1:15] Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to Life everlasting.

Here it is again with the following verse--
I Timothy 1:15-17 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to Life everlasting. Now unto the King Eternal, Immortal, Invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to Life everlasting."

II Peter 3:6-10 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same Word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the Day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up....II Peter 3:13-18 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth Righteousness.Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the Wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Again, the Word for the day--I Timothy 1:15,16 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief ["first" 1:16]. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first ["chief" 1:15] Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting.

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

09.20 Morning:

Happy is the man that findeth Wisdom, and the man that getteth Understanding.

Whoso findeth Me findeth Life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.

Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, . . . the rich man glory in his riches: but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the Lord.―The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.

What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the Knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for Whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.―In Whom are hid all the Treasures of Wisdom and Knowledge.―Counsel is Mine, and sound Wisdom: I am Understanding; I have Strength.

Christ Jesus, Who of God is made unto us Wisdom, and Righteousness, and Sanctification, and Redemption.

He that winneth souls is Wise.
