Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

11.26 Evening:

The sorrow of the world worketh death.

When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died.―A wounded spirit who can bear?

Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?―The Lord hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, . . . to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.―Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

Philip . . . preached unto him Jesus.―He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

11.26 Evening:

(II Corinthians 7:10)For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

(II Samuel 17:23)And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.--(Proverbs 18:14)The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

(Jeremiah 8:22)Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of My people recovered?--(Isaiah 61:1-3)The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me; because the Lord hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.--(Matthew 11:28-30)Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

(Acts 8:35)Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same Scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.--(Psalm 147:3)He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

The Faithful and True Witness

Proverbs 14:5 A Faithful Witness
will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

Proverbs 14:25 A True Witness
delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

Revelation 1:5,6 And from Jesus Christ, Who is the Faithful Witness, and the first Begotten of the dead, and the Prince of the kings of the earth. Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 3:14-22 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of My mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of Me Gold tried in the Fire, that thou mayest be rich; and White Raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with Eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My Voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Revelation 19:11-16 And I saw Heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in Righteousness He doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of Fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a Name written, that no man knew, but He Himself. And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His Name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in Heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of His mouth goeth a sharp Sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a Name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 142:5 I cried unto Thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my Refuge and my Portion in the land of the living.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"I cried unto Thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my Refuge and my Portion in the land of the living."

Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

Psalm 73:26-28 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my Portion for ever. For, lo, they that are far from Thee shall perish: Thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Thy works.

Hebrews 6:17-20 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath: that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for Refuge to lay hold upon the Hope set before us: which Hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the Veil; whither the Forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an High Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Lamentations 3:22-26 It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness [cp. 1Jn 1:9; 1Cor 10:13]. The Lord is my Portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him. The Lord is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

Again, the Word for the day--Psalm 142:5 I cried unto Thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my Refuge and my Portion in the land of the living.

11.26 Morning:

The Lord delighteth in thee.

Thus saith the Lord that created thee, . . . Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art Mine.―Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands; thy walls are continually before Me.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in His Way.―My delights were with the sons of men.―The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that hope in His mercy.―They shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that Day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.

You, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath He reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in His sight.
