Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

02.18 Evening:

Adam . . . begat a son in his own likeness.

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?--Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Dead in trespasses and sins; . . .by nature the children of wrath, even as others.--I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. . . .For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing.

By one man sin entered into the world, . . . by one man's disobedience many were made sinners.--If through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one Man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

For the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

02.18 Evening:

(Genesis 5:3)And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:

(Job 14:4)Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.--(Psalm 51:5)Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

(Ephesians 2:1)And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; . . . (Ephesians 2:3)Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.--(Romans 7:14,15)For we know that the Law is Spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. . . . (Romans 7:18)For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

(Romans 5:12)Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: . . . (Romans 5:19)For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One shall many be made righteous.
--(Romans 5:15)But not as the offence, so also is the free Gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the Gift by grace, which is by one Man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

(Romans 8:2)For the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

(I Corinthians 15:57)But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:1,2 I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my Rock, and my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my Buckler, and the Horn of my salvation, and my high Tower.

The Word for the day--
Luke 4:17-19 And there was delivered unto Him [the Lord Jesus Christ] the Book of the prophet Esaias. And when He had opened the Book, He found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"And there was delivered unto Him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written,"

Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me; because the Lord hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the Day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me"

Luke 3:21,22 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the Heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a Voice came from Heaven, which said, Thou art My Beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased.

"to preach the gospel to the poor
; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."

Luke 4:43 And He said unto them, I must preach the Kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

Mark 1:14,15 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Matthew 9:35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Matthew 5:1-12 And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him: And He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for Righteousness' sake: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in Heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

II Corinthians 6:2 (For He saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the Day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

Again, the Word for the day
--Luke 4:17-19 And there was delivered unto Him
[the Lord Jesus Christ] the Book of the prophet Esaias.

02.18 Morning:

Thou art my Hope in the day of evil.

There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift Thou up the Light of Thy countenance.--I will sing of Thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of Thy mercy in the morning: for Thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

In my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.--I cried to Thee, O Lord; and unto the Lord I made supplication. What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise Thee? shall it declare Thy Truth? Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me: Lord, be Thou my Helper.

For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid My Face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.--Sorrow shall be turned into joy.--Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
