Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

05.27 Evening:

I would have you without carefulness.

He careth for you.―The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him.

O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.―The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.―Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?―Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

05.27 Evening:

(I Corinthians 7:32)But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:

(I Peter 5:7)Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.--(II Chronicles 16:9)For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

(Psalm 34:8)O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.--(Psalm 34:10)The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.--(Matthew 6:25,26)Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?--(Philippians 4:6,7)Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 98:1,2 O sing unto the Lord a new song; for He hath done marvellous things: His right hand, and His holy arm, hath gotten Him the victory. The Lord hath made known His salvation: His Righteousness hath He openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"O sing unto the Lord a new song; for He hath done marvellous things: His right hand, and His holy arm, hath gotten Him the victory. The Lord hath made known His salvation: His Righteousness hath He openly shewed in the sight of the heathen."

Isaiah 53:1-12 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a Lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of My people was He stricken. And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death; because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His Soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 12:1-6 And in that day thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise Thee: though Thou wast angry with Me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortedst Me. Behold, God is My salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is My strength and My song; He also is become My salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon His Name, declare His doings among the people, make mention that His Name is exalted. Sing unto the Lord; for He hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

Romans 1:16,17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the Righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Galatians 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

Romans 3:21-26 But now the Righteousness of God without the Law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the Righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; to declare, I say, at this time His Righteousness: that He might be Just, and the Justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

II Corinthians 5:21 For He hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the Righteousness of God in Him.

I Corinthians 15:54-58 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the Law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Revelation 5:9,10 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the Book, and to open the seals thereof: for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Again, the Word for the day
--Psalm 98:1,2 O sing unto the Lord a new song; for He hath done marvellous things: His right hand, and His holy arm, hath gotten Him the victory. The Lord hath made known His salvation: His Righteousness hath He openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

05.27 Morning:

The Lord is good, a Strong Hold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him.

Praise the Lord of hosts: for the Lord is good; for His mercy endureth for ever.―God is our Refuge and Strength, a very present help in trouble.―I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.―Who is like unto thee, O people saved by the Lord, the Shield of thy help, and Who is the Sword of thy excellency!―As for God, His Way is perfect; the Word of the Lord is tried: He is a buckler to all them that trust in Him. For who is God, save the Lord? and who is a Rock, save our God?

If any man love God, the same is known of Him.―The Foundation of God standeth sure, having this Seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth the Name of Christ depart from iniquity.―The Lord knoweth the Way of the Righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.―Thou hast found grace in My sight, and I know thee by name.
