Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

09.02 Evening:

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.

The wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, . . . There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.―Rest in the Lord.―He that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works.

Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace.―That we . . . be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.

I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.

Ps 23:2 Isa 57:20,21 Mt 11:28 Ps 37:7 Heb 4:10 13:9 Eph 4:14,15 So 2:3,4

09.02 Evening:

(Psalm 23:2)He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.

(Isaiah 57:20,21)But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

(Matthew 11:28)Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.--(Psalm 37:7)Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.--(Hebrews 4:10)For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

(Hebrews 13:9)Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.--(Ephesians 4:14,15)That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

(Song of Solomon 2:3,4)As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.

The Lord is gracious

The Lord is gracious,
and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 25:8,9 Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will He teach sinners in the Way. The meek will He guide in Judgment: and the meek will He teach His Way.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 22:26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek Him: your heart shall live for ever.

09.02 Morning:

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart.

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? . . . He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increaseth strength.―Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.―Thou hast been a Strength to the poor, a Strength to the needy in his distress, a Refuge from the storm, a Shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the Wall.

The trying of your Faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.―Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the Promise.

Ps 27:14 Isa 40:28,29 41:10 25:4 Jas 1:3,4 Heb 10:35,36

09.02 Morning:

(Psalm 27:14)Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

(Isaiah 40:28,29)Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of His understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increaseth strength.--(Isaiah 41:10)Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My Righteousness.--(Isaiah 25:4)For Thou hast been a Strength to the poor, a Strength to the needy in his distress, a Refuge from the storm, a Shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the Wall.

(James 1:3,4)Knowing this, that the trying of your Faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.--(Hebrews 10:35,36)Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great Recompence of Reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the Promise.

Ps 27:14 Isa 40:28,29 41:10 25:4 Jas 1:3,4 Heb 10:35,36

I Timothy 4:15,16 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Psalm 72:17-19 His Name shall endure for ever: His Name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in Him: all nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be His Glorious Name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen.

"He hath done"

Psalm 22

To the Chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.

My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me? why art Thou so far from helping Me, and from the Words of My roaring? O My God, I cry in the daytime, but Thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. But Thou art Holy, O Thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in Thee: they trusted, and Thou didst deliver them. They cried unto Thee, and were delivered: they trusted in Thee, and were not confounded. But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see Me laugh Me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that He would deliver Him: let Him deliver Him, seeing He delighted in Him. But Thou art He that took Me out of the womb: Thou didst make Me hope when I was upon My mother's breasts. I was cast upon Thee from the womb: Thou art My God from My mother's belly.

Be not far from Me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed Me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset Me round. They gaped upon Me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint: My heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of My bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and My tongue cleaveth to My jaws; and Thou hast brought Me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed Me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed Me: they pierced My hands and My feet. I may tell all My bones: they look and stare upon Me. They part My garments among them, and cast lots upon My vesture. But be not Thou far from Me, O Lord: O My Strength, haste Thee to help Me. Deliver My soul from the Sword; My darling from the power of the dog. Save Me from the lion's mouth: for Thou hast heard Me from the horns of the unicorns.

I will declare Thy Name unto My brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise Thee. Ye that fear the Lord, praise Him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify Him; and fear Him, all ye the seed of Israel. For He hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the Afflicted; neither hath He hid His Face from Him; but when He cried unto Him, He heard. My praise shall be of Thee in the great congregation: I will pay My vows before them that fear Him. The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek Him: your heart shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before Thee. For the Kingdom is the Lord's: and He is the Governor among the nations. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before Him: and none can keep alive his own soul. A Seed shall serve Him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare His Righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that He hath done this.
