Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

04.06 Evening:

They that know Thy Name will put their trust in Thee.

This is His Name whereby He shall be called, THE Lord OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.--I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of Thy Righteousness, even of Thine only.

His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor.--O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

The mighty God, The everlasting Father.--I know Whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that Day.

The Prince of Peace.--He is our peace --Being justified by Faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

The Name of the Lord is a Strong Tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.--Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help.--As birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also He will deliver it; and passing over He will preserve it.

The LORD is gracious

The Lord is gracious,

and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:30 As for God, His Way is perfect: the Word of the Lord is tried: He is a buckler to all those that trust in Him.

The Word for the day--
John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.The Same was in the beginning with God."

John 17:1-5 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up His eyes to Heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify Thy Son, that Thy Son also may glorify Thee: as Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that He should give Eternal Life to as many as Thou hast given Him. And this is Life Eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom Thou hast sent. I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Thou Me with Thine Own Self with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was.

Proverbs 8:22,23 The Lord possessed Me in the beginning of His Way, before His works of old. I was set up [cp. Psalm 2:6; "poured" Gen 35:14] from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

I John 1:1-3 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of Life; (for the Life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that Eternal Life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 3:8-12 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; and to make all men see what is the fellowship of the Mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, Who created all things by Jesus Christ: to the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, according to the Eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: In Whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the Faith of Him.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the Same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Revelation 19:11-13 And I saw Heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon Him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a Name written, that no man knew, but He Himself. And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His Name is called The Word of God.

" All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men."

Colossians 1:12-18 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in Light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son: in Whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the Image of the invisible God, the Firstborn of every creature: for by Him were all things created, that are in Heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: and He is before all things, and by Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church: Who is the beginning, the Firstborn from the dead; that in all things He might have the preeminence.

II Corinthians 4:6 For God, Who commanded the Light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ.

Psalm 36:9 For with Thee is the fountain of Life: in Thy Light shall we see Light.

I John 5:11-13 And this is the record, that God hath given to us Eternal Life, and this Life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath Life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not Life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the Name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have Eternal Life, and that ye may believe on the Name of the Son of God.

Again, the Word for the day
--John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men.

04.06 Morning:

He ever liveth to make intercession.

Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, . . . Who also maketh intercession for us.--Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the True; but into Heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.

If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous:--There is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus;

Seeing . . . that we have a Great High Priest, that is passed into the Heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the Throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.--Through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
