Evening Devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

02.28 Evening:

The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord.

He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. . . . And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last.

Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.--If our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. . . .Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the Way Everlasting.

02.28 Evening:

(Proverbs 20:27)The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

(John 8:7)So when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. . . (John 8:9)And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

(Genesis 3:11)And He said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

(James 4:17)Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.--(I John 3:20,21)For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

(Romans 14:20)For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. . . .(Romans 14:22)Hast thou Faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.

(Psalm 139:23,24)Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the Way Everlasting.

The LORD is gracious

The LORD is gracious,

and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psalm 145:8)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 18:1,2 I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my Rock, and my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my Buckler, and the Horn of my salvation, and my high Tower.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 9:9,10 The Lord also will be a Refuge for the oppressed, a Refuge in times of trouble. And they that know Thy Name will put their trust in Thee: for Thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"The Lord also will be a Refuge ["defence" Ps 94:21,22] for the oppressed, a Refuge
["defence" Ps 94:21,22] in times of trouble."

Romans 8:33-39 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, Who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Hebrews 6:17-20 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath: that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for Refuge to lay hold upon the Hope set before us: Which Hope we have as an Anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the Veil; whither the Forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an High Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 4:15,16 For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

"And they that know Thy Name will put their trust in Thee: for Thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee."

Hebrews 13:5,6 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my Helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in Heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Psalm 62:8 Trust in Him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before Him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

Hebrews 11:6 But without Faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is [Ex 3:14,15], and that He is a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

Again, the Word for the day
--Psalm 9:9,10 The Lord also will be a Refuge for the oppressed, a Refuge in times of trouble. And they that know Thy Name will put their trust in Thee: for Thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.

02.28 Morning:

God so loved the world, that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life.

God . . . hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For He hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the Righteousness of God in Him.--God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only Begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
