Evening devotional

Hear this evening's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

11.30 Evening:

We glory in tribulations.

If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.―Sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing.

Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.―They departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His Name.

The God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

11.30 Evening:

(Romans 5:3)And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

(I Corinthians 15:19)If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

(I Peter 4:12,13)Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.--(II Corinthians 6:10)As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

(Philippians 4:4)Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.--(Acts 5:41)And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His Name.

(Romans 15:13)Now the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in Hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

(Habakkuk 3:17,18)Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

I Peter 5:11 To Him

The LORD is gracious

For all flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
but the Word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the Word which by the Gospel is preached unto you.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes,
desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby:
if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(I Peter 1:24-2:3)

The Word for the YEAR--
Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Word for the month--
Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

The Word for the day--
Psalm 107:5,6 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses.

Compare Spiritual with Spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:12-14; John 5:39)--

"Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses."

Psalm 119:81 My soul fainteth for Thy salvation: but I hope in Thy Word.

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after Righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Psalm 107:5-9 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses. And He led them forth by the Right Way [cp. Jn 10:3,4; Jn 14;6], that they might go to a City of Habitation [cp. Eph 2:22; Rev 21:2]. Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

Galatians 1:4,5 Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son:

I Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for His Son from Heaven, Whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

II Corinthians 1:10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in Whom we trust that He will yet deliver us;

Psalm 27:13,14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

Again, the Word for the day
--Psalm 107:5,6 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses.

Hear this morning's devotional [Prepared by Jonathan Bagster (1813-1872)]

11.30 Morning:

Now the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

Peace, from Him which is, and which was, and which is to come.―The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.―Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The Comforter . . . even the Spirit of truth.―The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.―The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he said unto Him, If Thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. For wherein shall it be known here that I and Thy people have found grace in Thy sight? is it not in that Thou goest with us?

(Luke 24:36)And as they thus spake, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.--(John 14:27)Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

(John 15:26)But when the Comforter is come, Whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me:--(Galatians 5:22)But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,--(Romans 8:16)The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

(Exodus 33:14-16)And He said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he said unto Him, If Thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. For wherein shall it be known here that I and Thy people have found grace in Thy sight? is it not in that Thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and Thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

I Timothy 4:15,16 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Psalm 72:17-19 His Name shall endure for ever: His Name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in Him: all nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be His Glorious Name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen.

II Timothy 2:1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
